Acupuncture Ear Staple

Acupuncture staples are medical staples made of a tiny surgical, stainless steel that is placed into the inner portion of the ear at specific acupuncture points on either the stomach point or the lung point, of the ear. The staple causes a constant stimulation to the acupuncture points. The staples can be used for the treatment of weight control, smoking control, and drug addition. How long does it last?

The effectiveness of the staples can vary for each individual. Most staples will last from 3 to 4 months. At the end of this period is when the effect of the staple will start to wear off. This usually occurs when your body becomes accustomed to the presence of the staples. At this time, the staple will need to be replaced, unless a desired weight is achieved or the addiction is under control.

What's the difference between getting one staple versus two?

There is really no difference. Two staples do not increase your chances of a greater weight loss or stop smoking addiction. One staple is adequate.

Does it hurt?

It is similar to having an ear pierced. You may experience a small discomfort or you may experience a slight sting but this usually subsides quickly.

What is the average weight loss?

There is an average loss of 2 lbs per week.

Is it safe for everyone?

This is a very safe procedure unless you are a female who is currently pregnant or trying to conceive. If the patient is a minor, they will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. This procedure is not recommended for patients who are battling anorexia or bulimia.

Are there any other factors that will assist in weight loss?

Yes. Eating a balance diet and smaller frequent meals will also make the procedure more effective.

What is the overall success rate of the Ear Staple?

There is an 80% success rate in having this procedure done, however, keep in mind that the ear staple may not necessarily work for each individual.

Will the staple interfere with daily activities?

No, as long as the staple is not tampered with (except when cleaning).

What if the staple comes loose or falls out?

If the staple happens to fall out, notify the office and another staple will be put in free of charge within the first month.

What if an infection occurs?

If the staple becomes infected, notify the office immediately and we will remove the staple and restaple after a few days.

How do I care for the staple?

Always keep your staples and ears clean and dry. Clean at least 2 times daily for 2 weeks using a cotton swab soaked in alcohol or hydrogen peroxide, thereafter clean periodically as needed.
